Boer War

Tpr. S. H. Mayfield, who was severely wounded in the engagement at Reitfontein, belonged to B squadron, under Capt. (now Mjr.) A. E. M. Norton, and is a splendid soldier, who on more than one occasion has won distinction for bravery in the field. When the Imperial Bushmen were at Vredefort he and Tpr. Davies galloped under fire almost up to, the enemy's lines, and brought back to safety an Imperial officer who was wounded; but for this brave deed neither of the troopers received any recognition. At Vredefort again during the affair at the huts Mayfield performed a particularly gallant action. Mjr. Norton and Lieut. Leane's horses were shot, and when the Australians were forced to retire Mayfield offered his mount to Lieut. Leane, who, however, refused to deprive the trooper of his means of reaching safety. Without more ado Mayfield dismounted, threw the reins on the ground, and started to run for the camp, so that the officer had nothing to do but take the horse. Eyewitnesses declare that if ever a man deserved the Victoria cross this trooper did. His squadron commander says Mayfield is a splendid fellow, and a wonderful scout. He is about 30 years of age, and as he is strong man it is hoped that he will soon recover from his wounds.

WAR TOLL.—The death took place in camp in Adelaide a week ago, of Gpl. Stanley H. Mayfield, late manager of Mr T. H. McDonald's Maryvale station, Streaky Bay. Deceased, who was well-known and highly esteemed on the Coast, resigned his position at Maryvale when the war broke but and enlisted, going to Papua and taking part in the hostilities there. Upon return he went into the 8th. reinforcements, 32nd. battalion, and was in training at the time of his demise. He served with distinction in the Boer war with the 4th. South Australian Imperial Bushmen, for which he held two medals, and in that campaign was mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts. He was the second man to reach the Boer guns at Lindley—in the incident which gained Mjr. Norton the D.S.O. and several of his men the corresponding distinction of D.C.M. At Vredefort he brought to safety a wounded officer after two others had been shot down in attempting the rescue. Cpl. Mayfield was the only representative from South Australia who rode in the royal escort at the coronation of King Edward VII. He was 38 years of age, and leaves a widow and three children.
