Biography

Philip was born about 1823. He died in 1917.

From the Galena Daily Gazette, 14 May 1872:[1]

Fire.
The two story frame dwelling house on Franklin street, owned and occupied by Philip McBreen, took fire about two o'clock this morning, and was burned to the ground. More than half of the furniture was destroyed. The house was a large, roomy frame building, well built, and worth about $1,800. Insured in the Andes, Miner & Smith agents, for $1,200. The cause of the fire is unknown. Mr. McBreen was away at the time, and his family were in the house alone.[2]

From the Galena Daily Gazette, 19 May 1917:[3]

Galena Pioneer Dead.
Philip McBreen Dies at County Infirmary Aged About 94 years.
Philip McBreen died this morning at the County Infirmary at the advanced age of between 93 and 94 years. Mr. McBreen was born in Ireland and came to Galena when a young man and engaged in the business of store keeping, later working at teaming. He enjoyed giving many interesting reminiscences of the early days in Galena, particularly of the trips he made to St. Paul, Minn., during the winter months hauling a bobsled of dressed pork. The trip was made on the ice of the Mississippi river. He also traded with Indians and had numerous experiences with red men. Mr. McBreen also hauled the bricks that were used in building the county infirmary. He has been blind for a number of years and for the past few years was practically a helpless invalid. He is survived by his wife who is at the infirmary, also a daughter, Mrs. Molly Martin of Chicago, who will arrive this evening.
The funeral will be held Monday morning from the undertaking rooms of Sullivan & Caille to St. Michael's Catholic church at nine o'clock.[2]
