Biography

Ireland Native
Edward McCabe was born in Ireland.
Edward McCabe came free to the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Edward James McCabe was born on 1 Jan 1827 in County Carlow, Ireland, and baptised on 2 Jan 1827. He was the son of Owen McCabe and Mary McCabe (Wholohan). [1]

Edward married Catherine Goss (~1834 - 1928) in about 1852.

Edward and Catherine emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, arriving 4 June 1856 on the vessel Fairlie.[2]

Together, they had the following children:

  1. Edward d. 15 Dec 1897 Aged 34 years
  2. Stephen d. 7 Feb 1938 Aged 80 years
  3. Catherine d. 29 March 1899 Aged 24 years
  4. Alice d. 11th Sep 1940 aged 68 years
  5. William McCabe (1877 - 1957)
  6. Patrick d. 1882 aged 14 years [3]

In April 1882, Edward and Catherine's 14-year-old son Patrick died at home.[3]

Two years later, in September 1884, Edward was tried for fraudulent insolvency at the Young Quarter Sessions after he retained part of his estate, to the value of 40s, with intent to defraud his creditors. Edward pleaded guilty to the charge and presented character references who said he was "known to be an honest man and at the time (he) had been drinking, and that was the reason he got into this difficulty. The whole of the money he was charged with appropriating had been paid back for the benefit of his creditors." [4][5][6]

Edward died on 8 Jun 1890 in Young, New South Wales, Australia aged 63.[7][8][9]
