Biography

William was born in 1879 at Kerang, Victoria. ^[1] He was the son of David McCann and Isabella McCurdy.

McCann was a dairy farmer at Lake Charm, before going into politics. He was a Kerang shire councillor 1912-1957 and Shire president 1917-1918 and again in 1938-39 and 1953-54. ^[2] He helped establish Northaven Home for Aged in Kerang and later retired there. He was the director Kerang Butter Factory and secretary of Lake Charm Baptist Church.

He married Edith Emily Taylor on 9 Jan 1926.

In 1918 he was organising secretary of the People's Party, and he was a Victorian Farmers Union councillor from 1922 to 1927, serving as chief president from 1924 to 1925 and founding president of the Primary Producers Union in 1926. In 1928 McCann was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council for North Western Province, representing the Country Progressive Party. When the Country Progressives rejoined the main Country Party in 1930 McCann followed them, but in 1931 he resigned from the Council to contest the federal seat of Wimmera, without success. https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/about/people-in-parliament/re-member/details/24/1377 ^[3]
