Biography

Samuel McCullough was born in 1876, the son of stone cutter William McCullough and his wife Eliza McCullough née Willis. He was born in Newmills near Coalisland, Co Tyrone. [1]

On 2 Oct 1899, he married Agnes Maxwell in St Anne's Parish Church (now Cathedral) in Belfast. [2] The groom was a 22-year-old bachelor, employed as a stone cutter, and lived at 22 Keswick Street. The bride was 21, a spinster, employed as a servant and lived at 25 Lonsdale Street. The witnesses were James Clarke and Martha Clarke.

In the 1901 Census, the couple were recorded at separate addresses - Samuel was in Klondyke Street, Belfast, with two of Agnes's sisters visiting [3] while Agnes was staying with her mother in Garvagh, [4] where baby William would be born a short time later.

The couple had at least nine children. In the 1911 census, it was recorded that they had had seven children, but only five were still living; however, records have been found for just six of them.

The known children were:

In the 1911 Census, the family was living in Brusse(l)ls Street: [15]

  • Samuel McCullough, 31 yrs, stonecutter
  • wife Agnes, 29 yrs
  • William, 9 yrs
  • Agnes, 8 yrs
  • Elizabeth, 5 yrs
  • John, 3 yrs
  • Robert, 9 months.

Samuel joined the British Army during the First World War. Unfortunately his service papers do not appear to have survived (see Research Notes).

Samuel died of influenza and pneumonia in Cliften Street Military Hospital on 2 Mar 1919, [16] and was buried in Belfast City Cemetery. [17] [18]

Research Notes

There are some discrepancies in the records of Samuel's military service and death. He is commemorated on a screen wall in Belfast City Cemetery, with an inscription based on details provided by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. [19] However, much of the information appears to be wrong:

  • his date of death is given as 3 March rather than 2 March
  • his age is given as 39 rather than 42
  • he is described as being in the Royal Welch (sic) Fusiliers, but his medal index card states he was in the Royal Irish Rifles [20]
  • his service number is given as 57202, although it is recorded on the medal index card as 130.

The CWGC record correctly records his Labour Corps Service number, his address, his widow Agnes's details, and the number of his grave plot.
