Biography
From his age at death, James William McCutcheon was born about 1834.
Marriage. In 1859, he married Jane Fitz at Tumut, Colony of New South Wales. Jane was known as Jean. [1]
In 1943, the obituary of their son, Francis refers to his uncle as being a Fitzgerald:
Mr. McCutcheon's father, Mr. James William McCutcheon, who married Miss Jean Fitzgerald of "Petfield" Tumut, was the first to open a school at Tumut, which was called the "Denominational". Mr. Walter McLaren, of Tumut, ,who rose to be headmaster at Ashfield High School, was one of his pupils. Mr. Jas. McCutcheon's uncle, Rev. J. Fitzgerald, was the first clergyman in Tumut. [2]
Death. James died almost three weeks later, aged 79.

DEATHS
McCUTCHEON.- April 19, 1913, at his residence, Derringullen, near Yass, James William McCutcheon, aged 79 years.[5]
DEATH OF MR. JAMES McCUTCHEON.
On Sunday morning Mr. James McCutcheon died at his residence, Derrengullen, at the age of 79 years. Deceased has been ailing for some time, and the death of his wife, which occurred a week or two ago, no doubt hastened the old man's end. Mr. McCutcheon was a schoolmaster in Yass district for years, and was well, known in the Tumut and Gundagai districts. The funeral took place to-day and was largely attended. The remains were encased in a polished cedar coffin and were interred in the Church of England cemetery, the Rev. J. Pike, officiating. Mr. E. Pearce conducted the funeral. [6]
