OBITUARY - Casino & Kyogle Courier - 23 November 1910

Death of Mr. D. McDonald.

On Friday morning last, 18th instant, at half, past 2, there passed away, as briefly chronicled in our last issue, a very old and highly respected resident of the district, in the person of Mr Donald McDonald. Deceased, who was staying with his. son-in-law (Mr. Martin Gooley), at Tatham, was hale and hearty until about a week before his death, when he contracted a severe attack of bronchitis, from which he did not recover. He leaves a family of grown-up sons and daughters and a number of grandchildren to mourn their loss. His children are: Allan (Western Australia), Patrick and Ronald (Uki, Tweed River), John (Sandilands), Alexander (Queensland), Mrs M, Gooley (Tatham), Mrs. M. Reynolds (Kyogle), and Mrs. J. Cooper (Tomki). Deceased was born in Inverness Shire, Scotland on the 17th March, 1824, and came to Australia with his parents in 1837 in the sailing ship William Nicol. His parents were among the first emigrants from the Western Highlands. The William Nicol brought the first news of the death of William IV to the Cape of Good Hope, but another vessel arrived in Sydney with the news before them. After a four months' trip they landed in Sydney. He often spoke of seeing the " chain gangs " working in George street. His parents settled in the Hunter River district. Deceased visited the Californian goldfields in 1850, but returned to Victoria in 1851 when the gold broke out there. He followed mining for a number of years, eventually to settle in the Hunter River district, where he resided until 1882, when he came to the Richmond with his family, where he lived up to the time of his death. His wife predeceased him by 37 years. His reminiscences of the early days were always very interesting. The remains wore interred in the R C. portion of the Casino cemetery on Saturday, and the funeral was a very large one. Rev. Father Bradley officiated at the grave, and Mr. Jas. Page had charge of the funeral arrangements.
