Biography

Josephine Diver McEachern, daughter of Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Rogers) and John McEachern, was born on May 6, 1886 in Mount Forest in Egremont Township, Grey County, Ontario, Canada.^[1][2][3]

As of the date of the 1891 Census, Josephine was living in Brant Township with her parents, her sisters, Bessie and Mary, and a domestic servant, Bell M. Rogers.^[4] Her father was a labourer and her family was Presbyterian.^[4]

As of the date of the 1901 Census, Josephine was living in Wiarton with her parents and siblings: Elizabeth, Mary, Kate, and John.^[5] Her father was a Grand Trunk Railway Section Foreman.^[5]

As of the 1911 Census, Josephine had become a Milliner in a General Store in Brandon, Manitoba and was a lodger in the household of Charles Gorrie and his family.^[6]

Josephine married John Hemphill on March 6, 1914 in Wiarton, Ontario.^[2] John was an electrical engineer from Kleinburg, Ontario, that was living in the remote village of Magpie Mine, north of Wawa, at the time.^[2] They had two daughters, Mary (1916) and Grace (1918).^[3][7] As of the date of the 1921 Census, they were renting a wooden house for $50/month at 774 Wellington Street East in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.^[7] John was working as an electrical engineer for a salary of $2400.^[7] John died in 1968.^[3]

Josephine died on April 7, 1976 and was buried with her husband in Nashville Cemetery in Kleinburg, Ontario.^[3] Their gravestone is flanked by the gravestones of their daughters, Grace and Mary.^[8]
