Biography

Alex McGuire was born in Appalachia, in Virginia.

Alexander Gratton McGuire was born on 29 Apr 1862 in Virginia, likely at Tazewell County but this is unconfirmed. His parents were William 'Bill' McGuire and Lucretia (Gillenwater) McGuire. William's father was John McGuire. In the 1870 census Alexander (age 9) and his sister are with their maternal grandparents at Jeffersonville, Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^[1]

Alexander (age 19) married Susannah Mitchell (age 22) on 2 September 1880 at Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^[2] Note that Alex's sister Mary Elizabeth McGuire married Susanna's brother Zedekiah Alexander Mitchell.

In the 1900 census Alexander (age 38) was the married head of household with wife Susan (age 44) and eight children at the Jeffersonville District, Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^[3] In the 1910 census Alexander (age 47) was the married head of household with wife Susan (age 51) and five children at Jeffersonville, Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^[4] In the 1920 census Alexander (age 56) was the married head of household with wife Susan (age 60) and two children at Tazewell, Virginia, United States.^[5]

By 1930 the family had relocated to Orange County, Virginia. In the 1930 census Alexandrer (age 67) was the married head of household with wife Susan (age 68) and daughter Pearl (age 28) at Taylor Magisterial District, Orange, Virginia, United States.^[6]

Alex died (age 86) on 24 January 1939 at Orange, Virginia, United States.^[7] He is buried at Salem Cemetery, Rhoadsville, Orange County.^[8]

Susanna was still living in Jan 1939 as evidenced in Alex's death certificate. Details of her death and burial are uncertain. A FamilySearch profile indicates that she died on 29 Jun 1945 and that has been used in this profile.^[9]
