Sydney was born in 1869 in Closeburn, Dumfries, Scotland, the son of William McMurray and his wife, Margaret Corson.[1]
In the 1881 Census of Scotland he is living with his parents, his paternal grandmother and 4 siblings at Newton Farm at Closeburn, Dumdries.[2]
He married Margaret Heaton in York in 1893.
In the 1901 Census of England he is living with his wife, Margaret and 2 daughters in Runcorn, Cheshire. He is a coachman. One daughter was born in Dumfriesshire and the other was born in Cheshire.[3]
He and his wife and 4 children migrated to Victoria, Australia on the "Miltiades" from London, arriving at Brisbane, QLD on 22 Dec 1910. He was described as a farmer and they were assisted immigrants.[4]
By 1911 Victorian Police where enquiring as to his whereabouts as he was supposed to be farming in the Western districts of Victoria.[5]
In 1917 Sydney applied to become an Australian War Worker under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply labourers and navvys for War work in the UK. He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 07 May 1917. He was residing in Shepparton, VIC at that time and was married.
He embarked on the SS "Clan MacGillivray" from Fremantle, Western Australia on 22 May 1917, arriving in Plymouth, England on 27 Jul 1917.
Sydney commenced work as a labourer at Messrs. Boots & Sons, Ramsgate on 31 Jul 1917.
He was off work for more than 16 weeks from 15 May 1918 resulting from a workplace accident which injured his foot. He was able to return to work on 10 Sep 1918.
He returned to Australia on the SS "Barambah", departing Tilbury on 23 Dec 1918.
Sydney was the thistle inspector for Kialla & Dookie Ridings in the Shepparton Shire in 1921.[6]
In 1922 and 1923 Sydney was fined in Shepparton, VIC for failing to ensure his children attended school.[7][8] A judgement was made against him in the Shepparton Court of Petty Sessions in 1923 for unpaid rent on his house and land.[9]
In 1931 his daughter Euriel died in Shepparton, VIC. He was resident at Tungera, VIC at that time.[10]
He passed away in 1938.
