Donald was born in 1879 in Kenton County Kentucky. He was the son of Peter McVean and Agnes Grant. He studied law and received his degree form the University of Michigan in 1902. He went to the Phillipines and settled in Cebu, where he lived for 26 years. He built a prominent law practice and helped to organize one of the first large sugar refineries there. He was also the secretary of 3 goldmining companies. He left the Phillipines a few years before his death. Cebu was destroyed during the Japanese occupation of the Philipines during World War II. He was a member of a Masonic Lodge in Kentucky, and of an Elks Lodge in the Phillipines. He also owned a large farm in the Grant's Lick, Kentucky. He passed away in 1942, and was survived by his wife, sister, one daughter, and one grandson. He was interred at Highland Cemetery.
