Biography

James was born about 1770. He appears to have been illegitimate. His father was probably surnamed either Gange or Janes (see christening for his eldest son who was named "James Janes or Mead" and whose father's name is given as "James Janes." It was not uncommon for illegitimate sons to be referred to by both parents' surnames or one or the other. Gange could be a mistranscription of Janes. [1]
