Biography

John Merrill died before 23 Jan 1761. At the time of his death he was a widower with children:

  1. John Merrill
  2. Jacob Merrill
  3. Rachel Merrill Crawford
  4. Levinah Merrill
  5. Margaret Merrill Scandlan
  6. Levin Merrill -- under age. His father makes provisions for him to be apprenticed to a trade
  7. William Merrill -- under age. His father makes provisions for him to be apprenticed to a trade
  8. Deceased daughter who married a man named Slocomb, with daughters Sephiah and Margaret. This may be Elizabeth Merrill who is attached as daughter to this profile

In his will, signed in 1759, John made provisions:

-to son John Merrill – 2/3 of land, houses, and orchards. Half a whip saw and pair of fire tongs
-to son Jacob Merrill – 1/3 of land, etc. A white hourse, sow & five pigs
-to daughter Rachel Crawford – one cow & calf, two ewes and lamb, one iron skillet
-to daughter Levinah Merrill – one feather bed & furniture, black horse and tack, two cows & one calf, chest, loom and gear, the largest iron pot and hook, 1/3 of of pewter, one box iron and heater, dripping pan and oval table
-to daughter Margaret Scandlan – two ewes and lambs
-to son Levin Merrill – an enslaved man named Jack. A yoke of oxen, one feather bed & furniture, hand mill, iron pot and hook, 1/3 of pewter, all clothes
- to son William Merrill – an enslaved girl (or young woman) named Pegg. A feather bed & furniture, warming pan, 1/3 of the pewter, one cow.
-to granddaughter Sephiah Slocomb – a two year old heifer
-to granddaughter Margret Slocomb – a two year old heifer and one small little (or Cittle?)
-for sons Levin and William Merrill to be apprenticed to some trade and to be under their brother John Merrill’s care
-Executors: son John Merrill
-Witnesses: Joshua Merrill, Thomas Merill, Scarbrough Merrill
