Biography

He was born Clement MESSERVY in Gorey on the British Channel Island of Jersey in 1655. His relatives on that island continue to this day to spell the name as Messervy. However, his descendants in both the USA and Canada usually spell the name as either Meserve or Meservey.

Clement's Descendants:

Three of Clement's sons also had sons who carried the name to every corner of the USA over the past 345 years. Those three sons were Aaron who started the Massachusetts branch of the family while Clement Jr moved his branch of the family to York County which later became the state of Maine and lastly Daniel Meservey who kept his branch of the family in New Hampshire.

Clement in the New World

Supposedly, Clement was still a teenager when he arrived in the New World at Strawberry Bank, a parcel of land which is now part of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. And it is reported that he married a girl named Elizabeth in Kittery which is now part of Maine and is part of the Portsmouth, New Hampshire metro area today. Clement and Elizabeth had a farm just north of Portsmouth located on the land currently occupied by part of the Portsmouth International Airport and specifically the portion occupied by the US Air Force during WWII and now by the Air National Guard. Various sources claim that the teenage Clement began working for another New Hampshire colonist when he first arrived. Clement helped that man raise and sell horses. As Clement got older, he was able to start his own horse-raising business which became the industry for the New Hampshire Meservey clan for many generations.
