Biography

Laura Josephine Metcalf was born in 1913 in Arkansas, the daughter of Henry W. Metcalf and Mary Idora Phenix/Phoenix, the last born of their six children. Laura, 24, and Joe Virgil Braziel, 27, both residents of Royal, Garland, Arkansas, we’re married on 18 December 1937 in Garland, Arkansas. Laura died in Arkansas in 1996. ^{[1] [2]}

In 1930, the Metcalf family lived in Ouichita, Garland, Arkansas. The household included Henry W. Metcalf, 62, born in Georgia, a farmer, who owned their farm; his wife, Mary, 57, b. Alabama; daughters, both b. Arkansas, and both in school, Bessie M., 19; and Laura J., 16; and granddaughter, Bernice S. Tisdale, 10, b. Arkansas, in school. ^[4]

In 1940, the Braziel family lived in their rented house in Mountain Pine, Garland, Arkansas. Their rent was $7 per month. The family included Virgil Braziel, 29, a laborer, who had worked 52 weeks in 1939, earning $650, and who had completed the eighth grade; his wife, Laura, 26, who had also completed eighth grade; and their daughter, Lavada S., 1. All members of the household were born in Arkansas. ^[5]

Laura died, aged 81, at a hospital in Hot Springs, Garland, Arkansas in 1995. She is buried with her husband at Lowe Cemetery, Royal, Arkansas. Laura was the daughter of Henry Walton Metcalf, 1866-1936, and Mary Idora Phoenix, 1873-1942. They are buried at another Garland County cemetery with their son, Walter A. Metcalf, 1893-1918, a WWI soldier. ^[6]
