Hi Charmaine, the Dutch Cape Colony project page is not the correct place to ask this question: "Hi. I am looking for early information regarding the surname ROSTOLL. I have managed to go as far back as John Rostoll born 16 July 1829 who married Sarah Ann Quin born 16 Sept 1843 Limerick City, Ireland. Unfortunately cannot find data related to Rostoll about their arrival in South Africa or from whence they came. I do have a coat of arms from Spain, and surname does appear in England, America and Canada but no information of a John or a Robert Albertus Rostoll born 1837. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you."

The G2G-help (https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/) is the correct place to ask such a question.

Rostoll-7 and Miles-3993 appear to represent the same person because: Rostoll-7, Rostoll-11 and Miles-3993 are all the same person (myself).
Rostoll-11 and Miles-3993 appear to represent the same person because: Duplication of same person.
Hi, I am Dorothy, a WikiTree mentor!! Are you enjoying your time on WikiTree so far?

Now that you have had a little time to try our site, there are a few more features you may find useful:

For instance, ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards; including some tips on writing biographies

Also a friendly reminder about adding sources and references to your profile. Sources are critically important for genealogy and you will be helping future genealogists by listing where the information you've added came from. This page describes different kinds of sources: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sources

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I still have much to enter on my family tree. I am not using Gedcom at this time, so it is a bit slower, but it is helping me to get to grips with using the Wikitree site. Thank you to all who is doing such an incredible job on Wikitree and helping amateurs like me to learn the correct way and usage of terminology as well as various other aspects. Much appreciated.
Hi again Charmaine, thanks for your private mail. Once you've signed the Wiki Genealogist Honor Code, you only need to link you own line up to the nearest already existing profile. Which also means you might have to start with creating your own direct ancestors:

It is the mission of WikiTree to have only one profile of every person, which means that it is important to search before one creates new profiles.

1 tip on how to avoid duplicates when searching, is to search on the surname [socalled LNAB - LastNameAtBaptism/Birth] only, and then sort on birth [oldest to the top], dense version [to the right of the screen]. This way you'll find more than 100 hits. If you search only on first names or in combination of first and surnames, you'll only see the first 100 results being presented where there might be a few hundred or perhaps a few thousand. It is also important to remember to search on variant spellings as well. It is the policy of WikiTree to write the LNAB as can be exactly read in the first most primary record found for a person, which are in many cases the baptism or marriage records (or transcription thereof). All other variants within that person's life time, must be aka'd or made note of in the biography.

On making new profiles, make sure that before you save a profile for the first time, that you edit the LNAB according to the local conventions of the country. For South Africa (and even Europe) the suffixes are mostly spelled in the lower case spelling: van der Walt, du Preez, van den Berg, van der Merwe [ens.]. This program automatically creates surnames starting with capitals, unless you correct them before saving. Also - it is very important to use sources and cite them through proper referencing.

Please mail me if you need advice; I'll get to you a.s.a.p. Regards,

Philip

I have been researching my family tree for many years now and find it a really rewarding and interesting hobby. It is always exciting to find new facts and work together with others in order to gain greater accuracy. I am a willing volunteer to work with and help genealogists as well as other members who are researching the same family surnames as my own. Thank you Wikitree.com for the wonderful resource/s you provide.
Hi Charmaine,

Welcome to WikiTree! We’re really glad you’re here.

The initial email from us has helpful links that will get you started on WikiTree, which is not like any genealogy site you’ve ever used.

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we all work together as one collaborative team.

What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree?

When you confirm your email address, you’ll have an opportunity to volunteer and tell us about your genealogical interests.

Once you volunteer, one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership, and you’ll be on your way.

Welcome to the family!

Carole

P.S. I'm always happy to answer questions.
