James Lindsay Miller was born in 1874.

He married Agnes Thomson in 1899.

OBITUARY
MR J. LINDSAY MILLER
Mr James Lindsay Miller, a well known figure in Green Island, where he had lived all his life, passed away at Upper Hutt on Tuesday last. Mr Miller was born at Green Island in 1874, and was educated at Green Island and Otago Boys' High Schools. His first employment was with the Dresden Piano Company, after which he entered the employ of his father, Mr James Miller, becoming senior partner of the firm of Messrs McDonald and Miller, bacon curers, on the death of Mr Miller, sen. He retired in 1941. Mr Miller was a Justice of the Peace and took a keen interest in all local affairs, being elected to the Green Island Borough Council in 1905. He served until 1925 and again from 1929 to 1931. He was mayor of the borough for a period of five years. Mr Miller was an active member of the Green Island Presbyterian Church, holding the office of deacon and clerk of the court for many years. He served on the executive of the Commercial Travellers' Club, and for a long time was a prominent member of the Commercial Travellers' Choir. He was a member in earlier days of the South District Rifles, and later joined the Otago Hussars, in which he attained the rank of lieutenant. He was an enthusiastic Mason, being past master of Otago No. 7, a foundation member and first master of lonic 191, and also past grand steward. He tvas a director of the Southern Starr-Bowkett Society and chairman of directors of Bayley, Tomkins, and Hedges. Mr Miller was also a past president of the Green Island Bowling Club. He is survived by his wife, who was formerly Miss Agnes Thomson, of Myrtle Bank, Green Island. and two daughters, Mrs G. A. Pearson, of Upper Hutt, and Mrs T. M. Dunlop, of Dunedin. [1]
