John Minihan was born in Ireland.

John Minihan was born in or near Lisheen Upper townland in Aghadown South Civil Parish, Schull Poor Law Union, County Cork, Ireland about 1841.

John Minihan survived the Great Irish Famine of the late 1840s, but may have grown up malnurished. The family lived close to the sea, so perhaps they did a lot of fishing.

John Minihan married Bridget Unknown about 1870, and had nne children, seven whom where still living in 1911.

John Minihan worked as a Vinter making and or selling wine, and a farmer. Perhaps he had a vineyard, or made or sold wine in a pub.
