Nellie was born in 1888 at Bolton, Lancashire, the daughter of Charles Mitchell and Sarah Ann Mitchell formerly Howl. [1]
She was baptised on 30 September 1888 at St. Peter, Bolton-le-Moors. Parents Charles and Sarah were living at Great Bolton and Charles was a general dealer.

In the 1891 census Nellie was living with her family at 107 Westbrook St, Bolton. She was aged 2 years. [3]
In 1901 the family was living at the same address. Nellie was aged 12 years. [4]
In 1911 the family was at the same address. Nellie was aged 22 and a student. [5]
The family then moved to Southport, Lancashire. Nellie's father died there in 1915 and her mother in 1927.
The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time the three Mitchell children were all living at 52 Belmont Street, Southport. Ethel, born 6 June 1886, was aged 53. She was looking after the house and not in paid employment. Nellie, born 23 August 1888, was aged 51. She was a head teacher at a public elementary school. Charles, born 24 August 1898, was aged 41. He was a metal turner. [6]
Nellie Mitchell died in 1972 aged 84 years. [7] She was the last of her siblings to die.

In her will Nellie requested her body be buried in the family vault at Duke Street Cemetery, Southport.
She left £1000 to her solicitor providing he was the administrator of her estate and requested he follow her arrangements as to her funeral as previously communicated to him.
Nellie left legacies of £1000 each to two friends, of £200 each to two further friends, £500 to the family doctor in appreciation of his care and attention to herself and her family and £50 each to two further friends.
Nellie further left £500 to the Southport Education Committee to provide a set of oak bookshelves and scholars library books at Birkdale County Infants School, Bury Rd, Birkdale in memory of her association as Headmistress of the school for 38 years.
She left a further £500 to Southport County Borough Council for the purchase of a silver cup to be awarded annually to the pianist competing in the annual Music Festival who in the opinion of the adjudicators shows the best promise of success, such cup being in memory of her late sister Ethel Mitchell of Southport.
A further £2,500 was left to the British Heart Foundation of 57 Gloucester Place, London in memory of her brother the late Charles Herbert Cyril Mitchell of Southport.
And lastly Nellie left £2,500 to the British Red Cross Society of 9 Grosvenor Crescent, London in memory of her late parents Charles and Sarah Ann Mitchell.
Her remaining estate, after the payment of her debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, was left to the British and Foreign Bible Society of 146 Queen Victoria Street, London. [9]
