Biography

Elizabeth MOGG (later CHAPLIN) was born about 1839,[1] possibly in Wales.[2]

Elizabeth married James CHAPLIN in 1856 in Cardiff, Wales.[3] The couple had at least 14 children (see below), with one (Rebecca) born in Wales and the others in South Australia. Impressively, 14 of her children appear to still have been alive at the time of her death at age 82.[4]

The family (James, Elizabeth and eldest daughter Rebecca) emigrated to the Colony of South Australia (SA). They arrived at Port Adelaide SA on 9 July 1858, onboard the Utopia, having departed Liverpool on 28 March 1858.[5]

James died in April 1902.

Elizabeth last resided in Upper Sturt SA.[6][4][7]

Elizabeth died, aged 82 years, on 5 January 1918, at her residence in Upper Sturt SA.[6][4]

Her funeral service was held, and she was interred (buried), on 7 January 1918 in West Mitcham Primitive Methodist Cemetery, Mitcham SA.[7][8][9]

Research Notes

  • The dates of death currently (as at 23 January 2023) on Find a Grave[8] and Billion Graves[9] of 5 January 1917 are clearly wrong, given her death and funeral notices in January 1918. The state of the grave is likely a factor (as well as some poor research).
