Biography

Juan was born in 1828 to Antonio Montoya and María de Jesus Armijo.^[1] In about 1853 he married Carmen Valdez Baca and according to the 1910 U.S. Census record, they had 14 children born with only 4 still living:

Research Notes

1. There were three sources attached that I deleted because they were clearly for someone else:
   • 1850 U.S. Census, Taos, New Mexico Territory, p. 174B - the wife's name is Mª Paula Herrera and there is no evidence that he or any of his family ever lived in Taos. If there is proof that he had a first marriage in Taos, this should be reattached.
   • 1870 U.S. Census, El Burro, San Miguel, New Mexico Territory, p. 2 - the only Juan Montoya listed is 41 years old, the correct age, but the wife and children's names do not match.
   • 1889-90 U.S., Indian Census Rolls, 1885-1940 - Juan Montoya is listed with a wife and two children with names that don't match this profile's family.
2. There is no evidence connecting Alcaria Montoya to Juan Nepomuceno or María del Carmel. Her estimated birth year is 1871 but she is not listed on the 1880 U.S. Census with this family. I need to check the Sapello baptism records at the FHL. If I can't find her with the siblings, I am going to detach her from this family.
