Biography

Mary Jane Morris was born in about 1867 in West Derby, Lancashire.

Mary married John Chadwick Highcock in 1886 at St Anne's Church in Stanley, West Derby.

By April 5th 1891, they were living at 26 Wilmers Place, Walton, West Derby. John was working as an overlooker at the rope works. They had two children - William (4) and Annie (5 months old).

By March 31st 1901, they were living at 9 Clyde Road, West Derby. John was a foreman spinner at a manilla hemp works - perhaps another name for the job he was doing in 1891? His wife Mary Jane, now called Maggie, was working as a laundress. Their son William was working at the rope works. There were five children too young to be working - Annie (10), Emma (7), Albert (4), Robert (2) and Harry (11 months). John's mother Sandonia, aged 67, was also living with them.

John died in 1901, aged 39. His death was registered in the second quarter of the year, in Prestwich district.

By April 2nd 1911, Mary Jane was living at 18 Vincent Street, West Derby. She had had ten children, of whom seven were still alive. She was 42, and working as a spinner in the rope works. Three of her children were living with her - William, now 24, was already widowed, and was working as a railway labourer (Looo dept). Emma (17) was working in the rope works. James (5, so obviously not John's son) was too young for work. Also in the household was a boarder, Mary Jane Morris, who was working in the rope works - perhaps a relative; she was 20, and had been born in Wavertree.

Mary Jane died in 1949, aged 82. Her death was registered in the third quarter of 1949, in Liverpool North district.
