Betty Jane Morrison was born on June 9, 1923 in Franklin Township, Ohio to Forest and Dorothy Richter Morrison. She was the oldest of three known children born to the couple.
Betty was raised in Franklin Township, Ohio. During WWII, she was a member of the Army Nurses Corps. She earned the rank of 2nd Lt. She was working at the Fletcher General Hospital in Cambridge, Ohio, where she met her husband, Arza Smalley. They married March 2, 1946 in Cambridge, Ohio.
They lived in Toledo, Ohio, until her husband was transferred to the U.S. Postal Service Headquarters in Washington, DC. They lived in Alexandria, Virginia after his transfer. They had three children, including a son who died when he was an infant.
Betty and Azra were members of the American Horticultural Society. They also attended reunions for the twenty-one 96th Infantry Division Deadeyes.
Betty passed away on November 21, 2015 in Alexandria, Virginia. She was 92 years old. She is buried under a military headstone in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
