Biography

Edward Mottram was baptised on 16 August 1675 in Uttoxeter.^[1][2] He was the son of George Mottram and Jane.

Edward named three children in his will, John, Jane, and George, all found baptised to him and Mary. He named his wife as Elizabeth in his will, who he married after Mary passed away.

Edward Mottram of the Woodlands and Mary Woolley, both of this parish, married on 8 April 1697 N. S. in Uttoxter.^[3] The folloeing children were baptised to Edward and Mary:

• Jane Mottram was baptised on 8 May 1698 in Uttoxeter.^[4]
• John Mottram was baptised on 1 April 1703 in Uttoxeter.^[5]
• George Mottram was baptised on 21 September 1710 in Uttoxeter.^[6]

Mary Mottram, wife of Edward, was buried on 12 November 1717 in Uttoxeter.^[7]

Edward married Elizabeth Braddock on 28 May 1718 in Rocester, Staffordshire.^[8] Two children are found baptised to Edward and Elizabeth (neither are mentioned in Edward's will):

• Edward Mottram was baptised on 8 June 1722 in Uttoxeter.^[9] He was buried on 1 April 1725, described as son of Edward.^[10]
• Elizabeth Mottram was baptised on 4 September 1726 in Uttoxeter.^[11] No burial is found but she was not named in her father's will.

The parish records list an Edward Mottram who was buried on 17 February 1739 [1740 N. S.] in Uttoxeter,^[12] which links to the date Edward's will was proved, but a later note about several Mottram's written in the front of another register states that this was the son of John and Jane.^[13] This later note was likely incorrect.

Will

The will of Edward Mottram of Wilscock in Uttoxeter, written 10 May 1733, named son John Mottram; daughter Jane Mottram; son George Mottram; wife Elizabeth Mottram. Witnessed by Thomas Foord, Thomas [Reece], and Rob[er]t Hall. Proved 4 July 1740.^[14]

• A Joseph Mottram married a Margaret Wooley, probably Edward's brother.
• The will of John Mottram the elder of Uttoxeter, written 7 Dec 1719, named son John Mottram; Elizabeth my wife; brother George Mottram, and son John an assistant with him; son Richard Mottram and his two daughters Ann and Elizabeth; grandson John Mottram (not yet 21) son of said son Richard; brother Edward Mottram; said brother Edward his three children Jane, George and John; "my" sister Ann Barlow; to "my" brothers and sisters Joseph Mottram, Richard Mottram, Mary Swalwan, and Anne Mottram [definitely Anne]; my son John Mottram and Jane his wife. Witnessed by Thomas Willock, John Willock, and Wm [illegible]. Proved 8 May 1721.^[15]
