Cyril was born in June 1907 in Bedhampton, England. Cyril was educated to Primary School level in England. He worked for four years on his father's farm then immigrated to Australia. He had extensive experience in sheep and cattle farming, and at one time started his own farm but was beaten by drought.
He married Beatrice McCorry in November 1933 in Queensland.
He enlisted in the RAAF on 15 April 1940 in Brisbane, Queensland, and worked initially as a flight rigger before qualifying as as an aircraft fitter Class IIA. His initial training was at engineering school Ascot Vale, and subsequently he served at Richmond, Wagga Wagga, and Archerfield. His address on his enlistment application was Train Street, Miles, Queensland. His occupation was listed as mechanic and his experience with machinery included driving a truck for Murilla Shire Council for 1 year and a trac-tractor for 2 years. While he was married to Beatrice at this time, they had no children. His enlistment papers record his height at 5' 5.5", weight as 133.5 lbs, chest 35.5", complexion as fair, eyes as blue, hair as fair, religion as Church of England. He was discharged 20 October 1945.
