Robert is the son of James and Elizabeth (Shaw) Murchland and the brother of William and Christen/ Christiana (Murchland) Lawther. [1] He came to America from Belfast, Ireland, on the ship "Peggy", landing in Philadelphia in June of 1773, after a journey of seven weeks. He settled on land in what was West Augusta District, Virginia. (In 1776, this became Ohio County and, in 1796, became Brooke County. Robert Murchland's land, in the year 2000, is known as Puntney Ridge and is on the waters of Cross Creek.)
In 1790, Robert sent for his entire family including his aged mother, Elizabeth (Shaw) Murchland. They arrived at Baltimore, Maryland, where they remained for three months. Robert then took a train of pack horses to bring them across the Allegheny Mountains to his farm. He died on 17 March 1798, and is buried in the Murchland Family Cemetery.
