Biography

Joseph Emmett Murphy was born 25 August 1912 at Ida Grove, Ida County, Iowa, United States of America, a son of Joseph Alberic Murphy and Marie Cecelia Emig.[1][2]

Emmett lived with his family at Ida Grove, Ida County, Iowa in 1920, 1925, and 1930.[3][4][5]

Joseph attended the University of Notre Dame at Notre Dame, St. Joseph County, Indiana. He played tuba in the band, and graduated in 1935.[6][7][8]

In 1940, Joseph worked on property abstracts for the Tennessee Valley Authority at Benton, Marshall County, Kentucky and at Murray, Calloway County, Kentucky.[9][10]

Joseph entered the United States Naval Reserve in November 1942. He was a Lieutenant Junior Grade in April 1944, and a Lieutenant in November 1945.[11][12]

Joseph entered into active duty in the United States Navy on 1 February 1943 at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; and separated from active duty under honorable conditions on 28 January 1946. He departed the United States for foreign service on 23 October 1944 and returned on 27 November 1945. During World War II, Joseph served in the United States Naval Reserve; U. S. Naval Training School, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York; U. S. Naval Training School (Recognition), Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio; U. S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, California; U. S. Naval Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island; and on the U. S. S. Muliphen (AKA-61).[13]

Joseph married Minetta Clarabelle Gardner on 13 September 1944 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.[14][15][16][1]

Joseph and Minnetta lived in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona in 1948.[17]

Joseph and family lived at Santa Ana, Orange County, California in 1950 and 1952.[18][19]

Joseph died 30 October 1982 at Tustin, Orange County, California.[20][21][22][23]

  • Another Emmett Murphy was well known at the University of Notre Dame in the early 1930s. Emmett Francis Murphy of Duluth, Minnesota, played varsity football (quarterback) and was a member of the class of 1932.[24] Murphy-21646 22:06, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
