Biography

John Miller Murphy was born in Indiana on November 3, 1839. In 1850, at the tender age of eleven, he traveled to Oregon with his older, married sister and a year later they moved to Olympia, Washington. There he held the position of clerk in his brother-in-law’s general merchandise store until 1856 at which time, he moved to Portland, Oregon to learn the trade of printing. In 1860 and after learning his trade, Mr. Murphy joined with anther man in Vancouver and created the newspaper, the Chronicle but that would only last for a few months. Mr. Murphy sold his half to his partner and moved to Olympia in June 1860. Once he was settled, he created the Standard newspaper, which he owned and operated until 1912. In 1862, he married Miss Eliza J. McGuire, they raised eight children before she passed away in November 1895. He then met and married Susan C. Sprague in May 1896. He was a supporter of the Union Army during the Civil War, women’s suffrage, and abolitionism. Mr. Murphy wrote several articles in support of the women’s suffrage movement, going so far as to publish an article in the book, The Souvenir of Western Women, edited by Mary Osborn Douthit in the year 1905.
