In the Past. Of interest now that we are celebrating the centennial, are these few extracts from the past, which are revealed since the passing a few weeks ago of one of the very old Maori residents, Mrs. Maata Puhipi, daughter of one of the first white men to come to New Zealand, and of a descendant of chiefs. Her father was Jonh Borodale Murray, a boat-builder from Glasgow who when he came to New Zealand married Katarina, daughter of Chief Hone Te Koni Poroa, the Peacemaker, and Chieftainess Ngapoura. Mrs. Puhipi was the fifth and youngest daughter and was thought to be about ninety at the time of her death. In these early days Mr. Murray built three ships at Ahipara in the bay which is named Kohanga. His first ship was named after his wife’s tribe, Te Rarawa, the second after his wife, Katarina, and the third was the Halfcaste, after his children. At that time the morals of the people were not of a very high order and they just lived together and reared their families. Mr. Murray had the distinction of being the only one of the early settlers to be married to his wife. His daughter the late Mrs. Puhipi, was one of a large family, only one of whom is still living.
