Biography

Samuel Myers was born in Pennsylvania, but grew up in Illinois and during the Civil War served in Company "I" 14th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry.[1] Samuel first applied for a pension based on his service in July 1889, received a certificate but did not apply for the actual pension until 1925.[2] He married Hannah in 1870 and lived in Shelbyville, Illinois, where two sons were born. He did not remarry immediately but about 1890 Samuel Myers moved to Oklahoma with his sons and settled on a homestead near the town of Edmond in Oklahoma County.[3] He established residency there in March, 1890 and built a frame house on the property. He eventually had 150 fruit trees and had 16 acres cultivated by 1892. He also deeded two acres of land for a community cemetery in 1892.[4] Samuel finally remarried in 1898 to Eliza Kincaid Jacobs. [5] Samuel died the age of 90 years, ten months and eleven days and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery. [6] An obituary in the local paper noted that he was one of the last surviving Civil War Veterans in the county.[7]
