Biography

Margaretha (Neukomer) Rohrbach has German Roots.
Margaretha (Neukomer) Rohrbach was a Pennsylvanian.

Margaretha, daughter of Johannes Neukomer and Margaretha Brumgartner,[1][2] was born 17 November 1816 in Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1] Her parents had her baptized 19 April 1817 at Saint Jacob's (Stone) Lutheran and Reformed Church in Brodbecks, Manheim Township, York County.[1]

About 1835, she married Solomon Müller Rohrbach,[3] son of Heinrich Rohrbach and Anna Christiana Müller.[4] They had three children:

  1. Ezra Rohrbach (1864–1934).[9][10][11]
  2. Pius Rohrbach (1866–1869).[12]
  3. Edward Markle Rohrbach (1870–1957).[13][14][15]
  4. Isaac Solomon Rohrbach (1872–1927).[16][17][18]
  5. Joannah Margret (Rohrbach) Heindel (1873–1964).[19][20][21]
  6. Martha "Jane" (Rohrbach) Shue (1875–1956).[22][23]
  7. Sarah Elizabeth (Rohrbaugh) Trone (1877–1972).[24][25]
  8. Amott Rohrbach (1879–1962).[26][27]
  9. George Washington Rohrbaugh (1881–1950).[28][29][30][31]
  10. Silas Rohrbaugh (1883–1966).[32][33][34][35]
  11. Alfred "Paul" Rohrbaugh (1884–1945).[36][37][38][39]
  12. Ada May (Rohrbaugh) Rohrbaugh (1886–1983).[40][41][42]
  13. Willis Claude Rohrbaugh (1888–1967).[43][44][45][46]
  14. Unnamed Rohrbaugh (1890–1890).[citation needed]
  1. Emma Jane (Rohrbach) Rohrbaugh (1867–1940).[48][49][50]
  2. Adam Nace Rohrbaugh (1869–1939).[51][52]
  3. George Wesley Rohrbach (1872–1966).[53][54][55]
  4. Alice Margaret (Rohrbach) Wehrly (1875–1948).[56][57]
  1. Margaret J. (Hoffacker) Garrett (1861–1923).[60]
  2. Alice Catherine (Hoffacker) Dusman (1864–1921).[61]
  3. Amelia L. (Hoffacker) Werner (1872–1905).[62][63]

The 1850 census shows the couple living in Manheim Township with Joseph Masimer (age 60, farmer owning 50 acres) and his wife Elizabeth (60).[64] The relationship of the Masimers to the Rohrbachs has yet to be discovered. The Rohrbachs (shown as Rohrback) portion of the household consisted of Soloman (age 43, farmer owning 60 acres), his wife Margaret (33), and their children Amos (13), Samuel (10) and Lydia (9).[64]

Margaretha remained in Manheim Township the remainder of her life. In 1860 the household included Solomon (age 53, farmer on land valued at $1,700), Margaret (44), their sons Amos (23, farmhand) and Samuel (21, farmhand), as well as the two youngest children of Solomon's sister Elisabeth (Rohrbach) Werner Behler Lamanda (10) and Adam Werner (9).[65]

By 1870 her son Samuel (age 31, farmer on land valued at $3,500) had taken over as head of the household in Manheim Township.[66] His father Solomon (age 62) had opted for the gentler occupation as a weaver.[66] Living with the father and son were Margaretha (53), Samuel's wife Elizabeth (29) and their two children Emma (3) and Adam (1), and another of Solomon's sister Elisabeth's children by her second husband Samuel Rohrbach Behler (shown as Bailer) (12).[66] The family's surname begins to morph about this time from Rohrbach to Rohrbaugh.

Solomon (age 72, retired) and Margret (63) continued living with their son Samuel's family in 1880 in Manheim Township.[67] The household also encompassed Samuel N. (age 41, farmer), his wife Elizabeth (39), their children Emma Jane (12), Adam (10), George W. (8) and Alice M. (5), as well as the elderly Elizabeth Fuhrman (75), who is probably an aunt.[68]

Before 1900 the adults with whom Magaretha lived—her husband (d. 1893),[69] son Samuel (d. 1899)[47] and Samuel's wife Elizabeth (d. 1897)[70]— had all died. Her daughter Lydia died in 1900.[59] Margaretha does not appear to be with her elder son in 1900; she may be residing with a grandchild or sibling, but has not been located in the 1900 census.

Margaretha died 9 November 1909 and was buried at Saint Jacob's Stone Church Cemetery in Glenville.[2]

Research Notes

  • Given that the couple lived with the Masimer family in 1850, there is a slim possibility that her mother's maiden name is Masimer (or one of its many variations. Margaretha's baptismal record provides only her mother's Christian name; however, her death record shows both parents.[2]
