Biography

William was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England about 1845. He is the son of Thomas Newbould. He passed away in North Adelaide, South Australia during 1909.

William married Jane Shakespeare in Adelaide, South Australia on 3 December 1873.[1]

William died in North Adelaide, South Australia on 31 October 1909 at the age of 64 years.[2] The following death notice was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Advertiser on 1 November 1909:[3]

NEWBOULD.—On the 31st October, at 11 a.m., the Rev. W. H. Newbould, the dearly-beloved husband of Jane Newbould, in his 65th year. Formerly pastor of the Truro Congregational Church for over 30 years.

William was buried at the West Terrace Cemetery in Adelaide, South Australia on 2 November 1909.[4][5]

The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Evening Journal, on 1 November 1909:[6]

The announcement on Monday of the death of the Rev. W. H- Newbould. came as a shock to a large circle of friends, including his late parishioners at Truro, where, as pastor of the Congregational Church, he had laboured successfully for over 30 years. Mr. Newbould was born at Birkenhead, Liverpool, 64 years ago, and came to South Australia in about 1864. He studied for the bar, and for a number of years was engaged in a lawyer's office in Adelaide. Then he decided to enter the Christian ministry, and was appointed to the charge of the Truro Congregational Church, with the oversight of different churches on the Murray Flats. His genial disposition and winning manner soon gained for him the respect and, in many instances, deep affection of the people, and when be retired from the ministry toward the end of 1907 he received striking tributes from those who had had the benefit of his ministrations. Nobody else probably was better known in the district in which he worked for such a long period, and certainly no man was more highly esteemed than Mr. Newbould. Just prior to leaving Truro he was presented with two purses of sovereigns, and references were made to "his honourable and useful career. He had filled his position nobly and well, and his help in all matters associated with the church would never be forgotten." Mr. Newbould. who was an ex-Chairman of the South Australian Congregational Union, has left a widow—a sister of Mrs. L. Grayson—a son (Mr. J. C. Newbould, clerk of the Local Court, Mount Gambier), and a daughter.
