PHM2 Gale Newell was Missing in Action during World War II.

William James Eastly (later Gale Philip Newell) was born on April 10,1918 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA. He was the son of Effie Isabel Phipps and George Wilfred Eastty.

Shortly after William's birth, his parents split and he was put up for adoption as his mother could not afford to take care of four children alone.

He was adopted by James Garfield Newell and Mildred Elinor Yost. They changed his name to Gale Phillip Newell.

They resided in Swanzey, New Hampshire.

Gale married Irene Lillian Newell on October 19, 1939 in Westport, Massachusetts, USA.

He was a Pharmacist’s mate for the United States Navy, aboard the USS Barton (DD-599), Third Savo.

PHM2 Newell went Missing in Action on November 13, 1942 (aged 24) at sea. He was below deck at his station when the USS Barton was hit and exploded.
