Mary Ann Newland was a convict transported to New South Wales for seven years. She was tried at the Old Bailey and found guilty, along with her co-defendant, Eliza Clark, of larceny, stealing thirty three yards of serge from the premises of Benjamin Stone at Fleet Market off Fetter Lane in London. Mary was said to be aged 19 at the time of conviction.[1] Prior to transportation, she was kept at Newgate Prison in London.[2] Both girls were sent to New South Wales on board the Mary Ann.
In 1828 Mary Ann was recorded as aged 24 and working as a servant in the household of Jesse Hudson, a former convict and shoemaker, in Parramatta. She had received a ticket of leave at this point. This is where she first met her husband, Mark Wright. The couple finally married many years later in Castle Hill, New South Wales. [3]
