James Jasper Newton was born in Tennessee around 1837. In approximately 1862, amidst the American Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army. He became a part of Forrest's Cavalry Corps, specifically serving in the Henderson Company. This unit was established during the summer of 1862 and participated in numerous battles across the Western Theater throughout the latter half of the war. Initially, they operated within the Army of Tennessee, but later, both Forrest and the corps were transferred to northern Mississippi, where they frequently conducted independent raids into Union-occupied territories in western and central Tennessee. The unit was disbanded on May 11, 1865, following the conclusion of the war.
James Jasper Newton married Susan D. Frazier on January 1, 1871, in Prairie County, Arkansas. By 1880, he had established his residence in Pettus Township, Lonoke County, Arkansas, where he likely built a life with his family.
Unfortunately, James passed away in February 1882 in Lonoke County, Arkansas. He was laid to rest at Sullivan Cemetery, marking the end of his life's journey.
