Henry was born in 1842.
Henry served as the Commander of the Department of Alaska from September 14, 1884 to September 15, 1884[1]
He was an Officer in the U.S. Navy and also served as Inspector of the 12th District of the Lighthouse Service in the early 1890s. He died in 1899 while at sea in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.
A notice of his funeral services was printed in the Oakland Tribune 29 May 1901 page 8 col 5:
"Tribute to Capt. H. E. Nichols: In the memorial exercises tomorrow, in Mountain View Cemetery, among hundreds of others, the grave of Captain Henry E. Nichols, who was in the battle of Manila bay under Dewey, will be decorated by the Veteran Reserves of this city under Captain C. K. King. After the decoration an address at the grave will be delivered by T. O. Crawford, Superintendent of School of this county."
He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery alongside his wife Juliet E (Fish) Nichols and her dad Dr. Melancthon W Fish and Juliet's step-mother/ biological aunt Maitland-508.
