Biography

Jane or Elizabeth Jane Nixon was born about 1832 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England the daughter of George Nixon, mason and Elizabeth/Isabella Armatage. She was baptised on 28 December 1831 at St Nicholas Church, Newcastle upon Tyne. The baptism gives her families place of residence as Westgate. ^[1]

Nine years later, at the time of the 1841 census the Nixons were still living in Westgate in Hill Street. George Dixon was still a mason. ^[2]

Elizabeth has not been found in the 1851 census though there is some suggestion that her family may have been in Scotland at the time.

Elizabeth married Matthew John Arkle in the June quarter of 1853 in the Newcastle on Tyne registration district.^[3]

In the 1861 census Elizabeth (age 29) was the wife of Mathew Arkle at 112, High Street, Gateshead, Durham, England.^[4]

In the 1871 census Elizabeth (age 39) was the wife of Matthew John Arkle on West Street, Gateshead, Durham, England.^[5]

In the 1881 census Elizabeth (age 49) was the wife of Matthew J Arkle at 60, West Street, Gateshead, Durham, England.^[6]

In the 1891 census Elizabeth (age 59) was the wife of Matt John Arkle at 60 & 62, West Street, Gateshead, Durham, England.^[7]

By 1901 census the Arkles had downsized and moved to 10, Victoria Terrace, Gateshead, a large but plain brick terraced house on the Durham Road. Matthew was described as a butcher shopkeeper but was very unlikely to have done business from the house and had probably retained his premises in Westgate. Elizabeth was now 69 and all the children had left home. ^[8]
