Biography

Leo Arlo Nogle was born on 24 April 1898 in Leighton Township, Allegan, Michigan. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Nogle and Malinda (Schiedel) Nogle.[1]

Leo served in World War I in the Marine Corps. In 1917, there is a census of Marines located in the US Virgin Islands where Leo was listed.[2]

On 10 December 1919, Leo married Theresa Pauline Piotraschke in River Rouge, Wayne, Michigan. Their church wedding was conducted by Rev. August Ebendick, pastor of the Christ Lutheran Church.[3]

In September 1920, their only child, Herman Arthur Nogle, was born.

About a year later, Leo’s wife Theresa divorced him, granted on 6 September 1921, in Kent County, Michigan.[4]

In February 1942, Leo registered for the draft in World War II, but no record has been found that he served.[5]

Leo died in Livingston, Park, Montana on 2 June 1975.[6]

Census

  • In 1900, Leo is found as a 2-year-old in the household of Franklin Nogle, Leighton Twp., Allegan, Michigan.[7]
  • A Nagle family is found in Caledonia, Kent, Michigan in 1910. There is a son indexed as “Nev” who is the right age to be Leo.[8]
  • By 1920, Leo is found in River Rouge, Wayne, Michigan, with his wife, Theresa. He is listed as a switchman for the railroad. Enumerated on Jan. 8, 1920.[9]
  • In 1930, Leo is counted in the home of his father, Benjamin F. Nogle, in East Mill Creek, Salt Lake, Utah. His marital status is given as single.[10]

Research Notes

  • Leo's birth date is given as 24 April 1898 on his Montana death record, his WWI and WWII draft registration cards.
  • His birthplace is given as Leighton, Michigan (a township in Allegan County) on his WWII draft registration card. (It appears that the family is found in the 1910 census in Kent, Michigan, which is mentioned in Leo's newspaper obituary in 1975.)
  • It appears that sometime after 1930, Leo’s parents moved to Missouri. He listed his mother as a contact at a location in Cameron, Missouri, on his World War II registration card. This town straddles three counties. More research is needed.
  • It is not clear whether Leo ever married again. Also, it does not appear that Leo spent time with his son Herman. More research is needed.
  • It is an interesting question: Why were Marines located in the US Virgin Islands in 1917?
  • Leo’s World War II registration card (1942), as written, says he worked for the Ferry Morris Deed Co. at Brush & Monroe in Detroit, Michigan. It appears this employer is likely the Ferry Morse Seed Co. More research is needed to clarify.
