Biography

Joseph Normecut (i) was baptised 13 March 1821 at St Leonards Bilston son of Thomas Normecut and Catherine Rowland [1]

The 1841 census [2] record shows Joseph (ii), aged 17, staying, in Bilston, at the residence of his future wife Sarah Eades, aged 19. Thomas Normecut, Joseph's father passes away early in 1843 and is buried at Christ Church West Bromwich [3] ; his death was registered in the same month [4] .

Joseph marries Sarah Eades on 26 May 1845 at All Saints Church West Bromwich [5] witnessed by William Eades and Hannah Eades (iii). Their first child, Emma, is born 25 September 1846 [6] and baptised in the November at Christ Church] West Bromwich [7]. The 1851 census shows all three Joseph, Sarah and Emma living In Grout Village (iv), West Bromwich [8]. Records show Sarah gives birth to a second daughter, Susannah, in April 1852 [9] [10] [11]

The couples first son, Thomas, is born 16 September 1854 [12] [13] , followed by James born 13 December 1855 [14] [15] Records suggest that eldest son Thomas passed away, aged 2, late in the year 1856 [16] and a third son, Amos, was born 20 June 1857 [17] [18]

Up to this time, records of the period appear to reflect an accurate picture of events, Joseph, Sarah and family living in and around West Bromwich less than 5 miles to the north west of Birmingham. However, at this point there is a marked change, records become disjointed painting a hazy picture which is difficult to confidently interpret,

Records suggest that in 1861, for reasons that are not clear (vi), the family are living under the surname Vernon, that is, for example, Joseph Normecut has assumed the name Joseph Vernon (i). Over the same period the family have moved from West Bromwich to the centre of Birmingham, the census shows them resident in Stoke Street (iv) in the St Thomas district, [19].

Eldest daughter Emma, marries in 1868 using Normocot as her maiden name [20] and takes up residence in the St Thomas district, where she and her husband William live at the time of the 1871 census [21] . Joseph Normecut alias Vernon with wife Jane (viii), daughter Susannah plus brothers, James, and Enoch (Amos) continue living in Stoke Street [22], that is until Susannah marries Thomas Hill in 1874 [23], James marries Dora Harriet Kirby in 1876, [24] and finally in 1878 Amos (Enoch) marries Elizabeth Peers [25].

WORK IN PROGRESS

Notes

(i) Multiple variants of name Normecut, Normancut, Nomacott, Normicot, Normant, Narmecutt, Norment, Normycott .

(ii) Typographical error on census reads Normant instead of Normecut

(iii) Most Likely Sarah's brother William and his wife Hannah.

(iv) Unable to identify the location of Grout Village although 2021street maps show a Grout Street in the Greets Green area of West Bromwich.

(v) Typographical error on baptism record reads Narmecutt instead of Normecut

(vi) The key known facts are: -

  • Verified birth records show, as previously detailed, Joseph and Sarah to have had five children: Emma born 1851 who marries William Downes in 1868, Thomas 1854 the eldest son who dies age 2, Susannah born 1852 marries Thomas Hill in 1874, James born 1855 marries Dora Harriet Kirby in 1876 and finally Amos (AKA Enoch) born 1858 who marries Mary Elizabeth Peers in 1878 ,
  • No direct trace of Joseph and Sarah Normecut (or derivative) or of their children can be found after the birth of Amos in 1857. That is no direct trace of any of the family using the surname Normecut or a derivative.

All indications are of a link between Joseph/Sarah Normecourt and Joseph/Sarah Vernon, but the details, the exact nature of the link remains unknown. Alternative scenarios are possible, Joseph Normecut and his wife may have simply changed their surname to Vernon (vii). Alternatively (a previously unknown) Joseph and Sarah Vernon may have adopted (officially or otherwise) the three children perhaps because they were distant relatives. Searches have failed to find anything to promote such options,

So far as the three children are concerned, Vernon is adopted as the family name and Normecut taken as a given (middle) name. Records show all three siblings give their middle name as Normecourt (or derivative) on their individual marriage records.

For the earliest documented example of this change refer to the marriage of daughter Susannah especially her marriage certificate detail [23] similarly the 1876 marriage registration details for son James to Dora Harriet Kirby. [24] Finally, examination of the 1878 marriage certificate for Amos (Enoch) shows it bears a hand written statement, dated 24 May 1880, signed by the registrar testifying the grooms surname and that of his father Joseph, to be Normancut and not Vernon has had been originally declared [25]

Without more evidence it is impossible to determine the truth, definitive evidence or alterative suggestions are welcome meanwhile, for practical purposes Joseph Normecut will be assumed to have adopted the name Joseph Normancut Vernon. No matter what scenario, most likely the pedigree of the three children remains as presented.

(vii) Vernon is the married name of Joseph's sister Susannah, husband George Vernon.

(vii) Another uncertainty, the 1871 census shows no reference to Sarah Joseph's first wife, possibly her middle name was Jane but this is not declared elsewhere. No record of a marriage between a Joseph Vernon and Jane. no reference after 1871 to either Jane or Sarah. A 1862 death registered in Kings Norton for a Sarah Vernon could be relevant but not proven https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?cite=orF8bspqfYJCcr%2B9mp3Cvg&scan=1.
