Biography

Lewis, the son of Joel Northrup and Phoebe Searles was born on October 12,1780 in Salem and baptized on November 5, 1780 at the Church of Christ, Salem, Westchester, New York. He moved with his parents to Sherburne, Chenango County, New York in 1793. There, he married his first wife, Elizabeth Lathrop, on August 18, 1803. They had the following children: Gilbert 1804, Colby 1805, Emeline 1806, Lucy 1807, Ira 1809, Mary 1811, Gilbert 1813, Esra 1818, Levi 1819, Lucy 1820 and Charles 1826. Betsey died in 1826. Lewis married secondly, Rebecca Edwards Northrop, in Perinton, Monroe, New York on December 17, 1828, following the death of her first husband Isaiah Northrop in 1819. The 1850 US Census shows him living in Perinton, Monroe, New York with his wife Rebecca age 67. Lewis died on May 2, 1853 in Perinton and is buried in Schummers Cemetery, Perinton, New York.
