Biography

Dr. WARD NOYES, b. at Andover, 21 Dec 1729 son of Nicholas Noyes and Sarah Ward ;[1] Ward d. at Andover, 26 Dec 1808;[2] m. at Andover, 19 May 1791,[3] PRUDENCE STEVENS, b. at Andover, 29 Sep 1751 daughter of Samuel and Hephzibah (Ingalls) Stevens; Prudence d. at Andover, 19 Jul 1835.

Dr. Ward Noyes was a physician in Andover. He saw service as a physician in the French and Indian wars as a surgical mate in the company of Capt. Jonathan Poor in the regiment of Col. Ichabod Plaisted on the expedition to Crown Point 1756-1757, in the same regiment at Fort William Henry in 1756, and on the alarm list at Andover in 1758.[4]

Ward Noyes did not leave a will and his estate entered probate 17 January 1809 with widow Prudence as administratrix. Real estate was valued at $4,190 and personal estate of $3,374.25 much of that is the form of notes owed to the estate.[5]

In her will written 2 January 1832 (probate 21 July 1835), Prudence Noyes made bequests to the following persons: Mary Noyes daughter of Nicholas Noyes; Abigail Perkins daughter of late brother Peter Stevens; Nancy Holt wife of Timothy Holt of Bethel, Maine; Timothy J. Stevens of Salem; Betsy Adams and Hannah Adams daughters of Israel Adams of Rindge, New Hampshire; Sarah Maria Noyes daughter of David Noyes of Norway, Maine; Arunah Bell; and Archelaus Putnam Black son of Moses Black of Danvers. William Johnson of Andover was named executor. Real estate was $639.50 and personal estate was $812.18.[6]

Prudence Stevens and Ward Noyes were parents of two children born at Andover.

i SARAH WARD NOYES, b. 13 May 1792; d. at Andover, 19 Jul 1818;[7] m. at Andover, 10 Jul 1817, ARCHELAUS PUTNAM, b. at Danvers, 19 Jun 1787 son of Nathaniel and Mary (Ober) Putnam; Archelaus d. at Andover, 30 Mar 1818. Archelaus Putnam kept a diary that is in the collections of the Danvers Historical Society. The diary bears the title “A Journey & Diary of Foreign and Domestic Intelligence, or Remebrancer of Remarkable Days, Weather, etc., Commenced, Danvers, Massachusetts, January 1st, 1805.”[8]

ii MARIA NOYES, b. at Andover, 27 Apr 1794; d. at Andover, 3 Mar 1829. Maria did not marry.
