On 26 December 1953, Josephine married George Hymer, who had previously been married to Nancy Travis, a union that appears to have ended in divorce. Their marriage license gave Josephine as Josephine O'Conner. Patrick O'Connor appears to have died in 1852 in St. Louis of cholera, but Felicitie had already remarried about 1839, when Josephine was only 2, to George B. Ross who would die in 1847. When Josephine later remarries she gives herself as Josephine Bell Ross.

They moved out west to California, where they would be known by their initials.

They divorced, and George remarried to a Malinda McCullough while Josephine remarried to John Theodore McConaughy, the marriage license in Pinoche, Lincoln, Nevada, 3 June 1873 giving Josephine as Josephine Bell Ross.

The first time we can see Josephine on her heritage, we see that she has changed her 1/2 Otoe mother to being French, and keeps the story in 1920. Her mother in all likelihood spoke French, but in 1900 we see several relations who were allotted on the Nemaha HB Reserve change the birthplace of their mother so that Otoe origins seem to be concealed. One gives Virginia and another gives Alabama.
