James O'Hare was born about 1822. He is the son of Nancy(sic.) and Hugh O'Hare.[1]
"Mr. James O'Hare, owner of Corrowong Station, Delegate, died on Saturday last, aged 84. Mr. O'Hare was one of the pioneers of the district." [2]
He passed away in 1900 in Bombala district, NSW.[3]
"One by one the old landmarks of the district are gradually stepping off, the last to bow to Nature's decree being James O'Hare, senior, of Currowong station, who passed over to the great and silent majority on Saturday morning Iast, at the advanced age of 78 years. Up to a month or so ago Mr. O'Hare appeared to be quite hale and hearty. About New Year he contracted inflammation of the lungs, and although he received unremitting care and regular medical attendance at the hands of Dr. Merrifield, he was unable to ward off the attack. For a week or so he was subject to variable changes, and his relatives and friends felt that there was little hope of recovery, the climax being reached on Saturday morning last, at 6 o'clock, when he breathed his last. Mr. O'Hare was one of the pioneers of this district, having come to Currowong, where (with his brother John) he settled down for squatting purposes some 50 years since. He subsequently purchased his brother's interest, and by dint of perseverance, keen foresight, and skilful management he succeeded in amassing a large and valuable property. Though of a somewhat bluff nature, Mr. O'Hare was noted for his hospitality and open-heartedness, the name of Currowong being a household word. No traveller ever passed Currowong, nor were they allowed to go away until their hunger had been appeased and their wallet well filled.
Mr. 0'Hare was highly spoken of by those in his employ, some of whom had been with him for a considerable number of years. He leaves a widow, 3 sons, and 5 daughters, to whom the sympathy of all is extended in their hour of bereavement. The funeral took place on Sunday last, when his remains were buried in the private cemetery on the estate, many coming long distances to pay their last tribute of respect to him. In the absence of the Rev. Father Norris, who was in Sydney, Mr. McManus read the burial service, the funeral arrangements being entrusted to Mr. A. McDonald. — Argus."[4].
