Richard Oliver was baptized in Wendron,[1] Cornwall, on 28 June 1778.[2] His parents were Thomas Oliver and Elisabeth Pryor, who had married in Wendron on 5 July 1776.[3]
Richard married Charity Caddy in Wendron on 17 February 1803.[4]
Charity was baptized in Wendron on 14 June 1778.[5] Her parents were William Caddy and Alice Pryor, who were married in Wendron on 26 July 1764.[6]
It seems likely that Richard's mother Elizabeth Pryor and Charity's mother Alice Pryor were sisters. When Alice was buried, on 11 May 1810, her age was recorded as 68, and when Elizabeth was buried, on 21 August 1810, her age was recorded as 61.[7] So it is very possible that they were the daughters of Richard and Mary Pryor baptized on 17 August 1743 (old style)[8] and 4 May 1749 (old style) respectively.[9][10]
The above old style dates convert to 28 August 1743 and 4 May 1749 in the new style (Gregorian) calendar.
Richard and Charity Oliver had eight children, all baptized in Wendron:
It is a curious fact that the baptism register entries for Josephus and Ann say that their father Richard was a miller, but the entry for James says that Richard was a stone-cutter.
An 1841 census record gives Richard Oliver's occupation as Tin Miner. He and Charity were living at Manhay in Wendron.[19][20] Their children Mary, Josephus and James, now in their twenties, were still living at home.
A nearby household contained a 35 year old shoe maker named Richard Oliver, in the company of a 30 year old Mary Oliver and a 9 year old William Oliver.[23] This Richard was surely the son of Richard and Charity baptized in 1803; he had married Mary Pearce in Wendron on 23 May 1830.[24]
Charity Oliver junior, eldest daughter of Richard and Charity, married one Thomas Oliver in Wendron on 3 October 1831.[25] They also lived at Manhay, and by 1841 had four children: Jane (aged 9), Ann (aged 7), James (aged 5), Eliza (aged 2) and Charity (aged 7 months).[26]
Elizabeth Oliver, second daughter of Richard and Charity, married John Wearne in Wendron on 24 December 1832.[27] In 1841 they were living at Manhay with their children Elizabeth (aged 8), Daniel (aged 5) and John (aged 1), and Elizabeth's sister Ann Oliver (aged 15).[28]
William Oliver, the son of Richard and Charity baptized on 20 April 1809, is difficult to distinguish from William Oliver, the son of William and Ann baptized on 23 June 1808.[29] One of them was probably the William Oliver who married Jane Wearne on 28 February 1832,[30] the other the 18 year old William Oliver of Trussall who was buried on 23 December 1827.[31]
The William buried in 1827 was probably the son of Richard and Charity, since the son of William and Jane would have been at least 19 in December 1827. Trussall is about half a kilometre from Manhay.
The William who married Jane lived at Treloquithack (very close to both Manhay and Trussall),[32] later moving to Gregwartha.[33][34] William's age was recorded as 42 in 1851 and 52 in 1861, whereas the son of Richard and Charity would probably have only been 41 and 51. Note also that William and Jane had a large family, without naming any of their children Richard or Charity. They did have a Mary Ann, likely named after both her grandmothers, who was baptized on 14 December 1834 (at which time they were living at Manhay).[35]
James Oliver, fourth son of Richard and Charity, married Elizabeth Jane Ball in Wendron on 25 April 1844.[36] In 1851 James and Elizabeth were living at Erisey Terrace in Falmouth in the household of Elizabeth's widowed mother. They had three children: Agnes Ann (aged 6), Sarah Jane (agedd 4) and Joseph (aged 1).
At the 1851 cenus Richard and Charity's household at Manhay included their daughters Mary and Ann and son Joseph, and also their 15 year old grandson Daniel Wearne.
Mary Oliver (Daughter, 34, Agricultural Labourer, Wendron)
Ann Oliver (Daughter, 25, Agricultural Labourer, Wendron)
Joseph Oliver (Son, 32, Agricultural Labourer, Wendron)
Daniel Wearne (Grandson, 15, Tin Dresser, Wendron)
Richard's wife Charity died in 1854, buried on 2 January 1854. Her age at death was recorded as 77, her abode as Menehey.[38]
Richard's daughter Mary died in 1857, buried on 6 February. Her age at death was recorded as 47, her abode as Menehey.[39]
At the 1861 census Joseph and Ann were still living with their father Richard at Manhay. After being a tin miner in both 1841 and 1851, Richard Oliver this time said that he was a miller (although it may have been 30 years or more since he last actively followed that occupation). He was 82 years old.
