Biography

Maria/ Francesca was born in Castelvetrano ^[1], in Trapani Province, Sicily, around 1818 ^[2], a probable daughter of Antonino Oliveri, a seive-maker, and Maria Sparacino ^[3]. She married Calogero Cicio, middle class, ^[4] in 1838 when she was 20 and he 24. They had multiple children. Francesca had been widowed by Calogero and was still living as of 27 December 1877 ^[5].

Research Notes

Her marriage record with Calogero is under the name Maria Oliveri. There are birth records for 5 children born to a Calogero Cicio and a Francesca Oliveri. I believe that this is another case of a person being given one name (either deliberately or in an error), and being called a different name. The evidence that Maria Oliveri and Francesca Oliveri are the same woman is: (1) Maria and Francesca were born the same year, 1818; (2) the two Calogero Cicio's are within 3 years of each other in birth; (3) the names of their first 2 children with Francesca -- Rosa and Ignazio -- correspond to the names of Calogero's parents from the marriage record with Maria; (4) the names of their next 2 children -- Antonino and Maria -- correspond to the names of Maria Oliveri's parents, per her marriage record; (5) there is no marriage record for a Calogero Cicio with a Francesca Oliveri, and there would have been such a record since Ancestry has indexed the years in which their marriage would have occurred. Her brother Giuseppe's 1847 marriage record records the family surname as Livreri, rather than Oliveri. It seems that it may have morphed into the more-familiar name of Oliveri once they lived in Santa Margherita?
