Biography

Anna was born on 15 Oct 1876 in Gärdebyn, Rättvik, Kopparberg, Sweden to Olof Hansson & Anna Andersdotter and was baptized on 16 Oct 1874.[1] Anna immigrated with her parents settling in Springvale Township, Isanti, MN. The area had a large population from Rättvik. There is a book called, "A Community Transplanted," by Robert C. Ostergren which goes into great detail about Rättvik and the emigrants. [1] [2]

Anna married Raymond Leach on 25 Jun 1893 in Isanti county, MN[2] and they had 10 children:

  1. Helen Mae b. 1892
  2. Vernon Randolph b. 1894
  3. Lula Elizabeth b. 1895
  4. Roy Marion b. 1898
  5. Milton Earl b. 1899
  6. Raymond McDonald b. 1902
  7. Irene Georgia b. 1904
  8. Elmer b. 1906
  9. Robert Morris b. abt 1908
  10. George Fredrick b. 1911

Anna died on 7 Apr 1911 in Princeton, Mille Lacs, Minnesota, United States.[3] She had given birth to her 10th child and died due to shock & exhaustion/prolonged labor & ad hernia placenta. She was buried in Oak Knoll Cemetery in Princeton on 9 Apr 1911.[4] After her death, Roy went to live with their maternal grandparents. Milton was employed by Mr. & Mrs. Frank Henschel and continued on with them. Several of the youngest children were adopted out to other families. Irene was adopted by Adelbert & Elizabeth (LaPorte) Pierson, Elmer was adopted by a Wilson family, and the youngest born Victor Amos Leach was adopted by Alburn & Julia Stauty in Milaca who changed his name to George Fredrick Stauty.

Newspaper Mentions

All from the Princeton Union from Chronicling America (https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/)

10 May 1900, p.5:
"Ray Leach, his wife and child, are all suffering from severe attacks of pneumonia at their home on the North side. The condition of all the patients is critical."
29 Apr 1909, p.5:
"Wanted, some work to do at home. Washing preferred. Apply to Mrs. Ray Leach."
10 Feb 1910:
"Mrs. Annie Leach made application to the board for payment of her house rent by the county, and on motion of Commissioner Uglem, seconded by Commissioner Dalchow, the matter was referred to Commissioner Cater for adjustments."
Mrs. Ray Leach died last Friday evening, April 7, at 6 o'clock as a result of childbirth, aged 35 years. The case is one of particular sadness, as by her death 10 children—ranging in age from that of the baby born at the time of her passing away to that of the oldest child, who is 18—are left motherless.
13 Apr 1911, p. 11:
Funeral services were held at the Congregational church on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. J. O. Fisher. A double quartet rendered several impressive vocal selections at the obsequies, which were largely attended. The interment was in Oak Knoll cemetery.
Mrs. Leach was born in Sweden and came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Soldin. The family settled in Spring Vale. She was married in 1892 and a husband and 10 children survive her. The children are: Mrs. Lynn Whitbemore, Lula, Vernon, Roy, Milton, Raymond, Irene, Elmer, Robert and the baby. Of these Roy will live with his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Soldin, at Spring Vale and Milton will be cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Henschel, by whom the boy has been employed, while someone will probably be found to adopt the baby.
Mrs. Leach was a good, industrious woman and worked early and late that her large family might be cared for. Even upon the morning of the day when she died she had washed a large quantity of clothes for one of her patrons. Mrs. Leach is spoken of in kindly words by her neighbors and friends, all of whom sympathize with the little children who are left to combat the world without a mother's care and protection.
