Biography

John Osbaldeston was the son of Syr Alexander Osbaldeston, knight, alias Osbalston, and his wife Anne, the daughter of Syr Christopher Sudworthe, knyght,[1] alias Sowthworthe of Samlesbury[2] or the daughter of Sir Richard Sowthworth of Samesbury, knt,[3] alias Southworth of Samblesbury.[4]

John's mother died and his father married his second wife, Ellen/Ellyne[1]/Helene[2], the daughter of Thomas Tyldesley/Tyllysley[1]/ Tildesley[4] of Wardley.[5] Wardley is in Lancashire in England.

John had half-siblings:

  1. Richard Osbaldeston[1] [2] [5] of Sunderland;[4]
  2. Henry/Harry;[5] [1] [2]
  3. Thomas;[1] [5]
  4. Thurstan/Thorston;[5] [1]
  5. William;[1] [5]
  6. Anne,[1] who was married, before 1533, to Edward the eldest son and heir of Thomas Langtone Baron of Newtone and his wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Edward Stanley lord Mountegle;[6]
  7. Elizabeth,[1] who was marred, before 1533, to Harry the son and heir of Henry Kyghley/s[1] Kighley of Kighley[2] and/or of Inskippe, esq, and his wife Ciscelye, the daughter of Sir Thomas Butler of Bewse;[7]
  8. Siscelye;[1]
  9. Alyce;[1]
  10. Isabell;[1]
  11. Elnor[1]/Eleanor who was married to Thomas Clyfton of Westby;[2] and
  12. Jane,[1] who was married to William Gerard of the Ynche/Ince, co Lancaster, armiger;[2]

Before 1533, John was married to Marget, the daughter of Lord Strange.[1] Margaret was the daughter of George Stanley Lord Strange, son and heir of Thomas, first Erle of Derby.[2] [3] The Visitation of 1664-5 says Sir John Osbaldeston of Osbaldeston married Margaret, sister of Sir George Stanley (died 1487), and the daughter of Sir Thomas Stanley (died 1504), lord Stanley of the Isle of Man, steward of the household to King Edward IV, KG, created Earl of Derby by Henry VII, and his wife Eleanor, the daughter of Richard Nevile, earl of Salisbury.[8]

John Osbaldston of Osbaldston, esq,[3] and Margaret had children:

  1. Edward Osbaldestone of Osbaldeston, armiger or esquire, who married Mawde, the daughter and coheir of Sir Thomas Halsall of Halsall, co Lancaster, knt,[3] and they had 6 children by 1567;[2]
  2. Alexander, second son;[2]
  3. Thomas, third son;[2]
  4. Margaret;[2]

John married a second time to Jane, the daughter of John Stanley, armiger, widow of Sir Thomas Holsall of Halsall, co Lancaster, knt, and they had no children.[2]

Between 1538 and 1544, John, son of Richard Osbaston, esq, was the defendant in a case in the Court of Chancery brought by Edward, son and heir and executor of Richard Newporte, and brother of Susan

John Osbaldestone of Osbaldestone was living in 1567.[2]

In August 1574, there was a muster of soldiers in the county of Lancaster, and John Osbaldeston, Esq, of the hundred of Blackburn was to furnish: 2 Light Horses, 2 Corslets, 2 Almayne Riverts or Plate-Coats, 2 Pikes, 2 Long Bows, 2 Sheaves of Arrows, 2 Steel Caps or Skulls, 1 Calivers, and 1 Morion.[9]

Around 1585-6, Edward Osbaldeston affixed his hand and seal to a declaration made by "an association of Lancashire gentlemen for the defence of Queen Elizabeth against the machinations of Mary Queen of Scots and the other enemies of the state," in which they "Pledged themselves in the most solemn manner to defend the queen against all her enemies, foreign and domestic."[10] This suggests John was no longer head of the Osbaldestons.
