Biography

Joseph was born in 1898. He passed away in 1982. He was the son of William Ottens (1866–1905) and Henrietta "Etta" Bielema (1870–1958), who married on 29 October 1888 in Morrison, Whiteside County, Illinois. William was a Dutch immigrant.

In 1900, baby Joe lived in Fulton, Whiteside County, with his parents, William (age 33) and Etta (age 30), and his siblings: Claus [Clarence] W. (age 11), Nancy (age 9), John (age 5), and Minnie (age 4). William was a laborer in a sawmill.

In 1910, Joe (age 10) lived in Fulton with his widowed mother, Etta (age 38), and his siblings: Clarence [Claus] (age 19), John (age 16), Winifred "Winnie" (age 13), George (age 7), and Jacob "Jake" (age 5). Etta cleaned houses. Clarence was a laborer on the railroad. John was a laborer in a metalworks factory.

After 1950, Joe married Nona Hale Foote.
