Biography

Augusta was the sixth child of Anna and Carl Otto, born at Kanmantoo. In 1902 she married George Slade in the parsonage of the Pirie Street Methodist Church in Adelaide and they lived in Murray Bridge for the rest of their lives.
George was born at Harrogate in the Adelaide Hills, and eventually took up farming near Murray Bridge.
His father, William although born on Kangaroo Island, spent many years working with the Marine and Harbours’ Board at Port Adelaide.William operated the controls that opened the bridge to allow the “Troubridge” to pass through on its way to Kangaroo Island.
In those days, shipping was the only means of transporting people and cargo to Kangaroo Island.
Augusta died in 1926, aged 52 and was buried at the Murray Bridge Cemetery in the same plot as Agnes, George’s first wife, and where, twenty nine years later, George, aged 92, was buried.
