Biography

Leopoldo Palacios was born on 15 November 1905 in Burgos, Tamaulipas, Mexico to Porfirio Palacios and Virginia Palacios.^[1] He married Lilia Magdalena Farias on 10 January 1932 in Hidalgo County, Texas.^[2] They had 6 children. Leopoldo died on 12 November 1996 in McAllen, Texas, three days shy of his 91st birthday.^[3] He is buried in Guadalupe Cemetery in Pharr, Texas.^[4]

United States Census History

1920: Leopoldo Palacios is enumerated in his parents' household in Justice Precinct 8, Hidalgo County, Texas; 6 of his other siblings live in the household. Leopoldo is 14 years old; the family immigrated the previous year, in 1919. Under citizenship, he is listed as "Alien." He speaks Spanish and cannot speak English, but he is able to read and write.^[5]

1940: Leopoldo is enumerated as Head of Household in a house on Clark Avenue in Pharr, Texas. He owns the home, which is valued at $200. He lives with his wife and 4 children and works as a farm laborer; in the week prior to the Census, he worked 60 hours. He worked a total of 40 weeks in 1939 and earned an income of $380. The highest grade he completed in school was 4th grade. Under citizenship, he is listed as "Alien."^[6]

World War II Draft Registration

16 October 1940: Leopoldo Palacios is 34 years old and is living in Pharr, Texas. He is employed by Jack Williams. He is 5'7" tall and weighs 147 pounds. He has a dark brown complexion, black hair, and brown eyes. His next of kin is his wife, Lilia Farias Palacios.^[7]
